Far from being an aggravating spelling mistake, underwares is meant to designate subpar software and services. Not subpar in quality, but rather in that their direct value and usefulness are yet to be quantified.
Sometimes you find yourself designing an interesting solution to a problem no one really has. Sometimes, you even end up implementing said solution, because you felt like it, because it was entertaining, or because you found some immediate use for it. Sometimes, you are bored.
Therapeutic code, tools and glue scripts whose scope of usefulness are very specific or narrow, things that were depreciated in favor of more prolific alternatives, online services without public registration, offered to a few hand-picked individuals, eccentric research projects…
In layman’s terms: We create stuff no one cares about.
However, we have trouble with the concept of completely wasted efforts, so we prefer to call these “solutions in search of a problem”. Most things here are Open Source.
